From Lab

As mentioned in Steel Lab 1, six 1018 steel tensile bars were homogenized at 950°C and then each was

subjected to one of the following heat treatments:

• water quenching (WQ)

• water quenching followed by a 1 hour anneal at 300°C (WQ + 300)

• water quenching followed by a 1 hour anneal at 500°C (WQ + 500)

• Oil quenching, (OQ)

• Air cooling, (AC)

• Furnace cooling (FC)

These were repeated three times. The tensile data for all three rounds of testing is in the Excel file posted to

Canvas.

1. In the following pages, you will need to summarize the data that was posted on Canvas. For elastic modulus, yield strength, and toughness, present a bar chart, the ANOVA test, and the multiple range test.

a. Bar chart of the Elastic Modulus for the six heat treatments with vertical standard deviation error bars using all the available data. For full credit include figure numbers and titles, axis labels with units, figure

numbers and descriptions captions.

b. Use ANOVA analysis to test if six different heat treatments had an effect on the Elastic Modulus. Present your table for the ANOVA Test in the space given below.

c. Use Multiple Range Test to test if six different heat treatments had an effect on the Elastic Modulus. Present your Multiple Range Test table in the space given below.

d. Bar chart of the Yield Strength for the six heat treatments with vertical standard deviation error bars using all the available data. For full credit include figure numbers and titles, axis labels with units, figure

numbers and descriptions captions.

e. ANOVA Test of the Yield Strength for the six heat treatments. Present your table for the ANOVA Test in the space given below.

f. Multiple Range Test of the Yield Strength for the six heat treatments. Present your Multiple Range Test table in the space given below.

g. Bar chart of the Toughness for the six heat treatments with vertical standard deviation error bars using all the available data. For full credit include figure numbers and titles, axis labels with units, figure numbers

and descriptions captions.

h. ANOVA Test of the Toughness for the six heat treatments. Present your table for the ANOVA Test in the space given below.

i. Multiple Range Test of the Toughness for the six heat treatments. Present your Multiple Range Test table in the space given below.

2. Using the plots and statistical results you generated, for the following material properties, describe the effect the heat treatments had on the following:

a. Elastic Modulus

b. Yield Strength

c. Toughness

3. Consider the microstructure you predicted for each sample based on its heat treatment. Briefly describe how these microstructures relate to the trends seen in the following properties:

3 sentences max

a. Elastic Modulus

b. Yield Strength

c. Toughness

4. From the trends you described above, name one unexpected value or inconsistency in the data. Then describe one source of error that may have led to this result. 3 sentences max
