Writing assignment

To obtain writing credit for Math 461 you must submit a writing assignment. I will give you feedback on this assignment and you will submit at least one, and possibly more, revisions. If you do not need writing credit for this course, you may opt out of this assignment by informing me via email at [email protected].
Topic:
The topic will be one of the major results of abstract algebra. Some possibilities include La- grange’s Theorem, one of the Isomorphism Theorems, or the classification of finitely generated abelian groups. You must submit your topic to me before
Structure:
The structure will be that of a mathematical paper. You can find many examples online at arxiv.org Title- The paper will have a title. Abstract- This is a short paragraph summarizing the main result of the paper and their signifi- cance. Introduction- This gives a longer explanation of the result and where it fits into the broader mathematical context. You should state the main theorem within the introduction of the paper. Further Sections-You will write a detailed proof of the main result, by breaking it down into simpler propositions and lemmas. You will give proofs of these, connected with paragraphs, and conclude with the proof of the main result. References-References must be cited within the text, using endnotes. You might end up citing only the textbook.
Tools:
I recommend using Latex for mathematical writing. If you are not familiar with Latex, Lyx is a frontend for Latex which can be easier for new users. Your submission must be typed.
Dates:
Friday, March 2nd- Due date for submission of topic, OR opt-out, by email. Friday March 23rd- First draft due. Friday April 11th- Second draft due. Friday April 27th- final draft due, last day of class.
