In this week's discussion we are going to look at several different topics - abuse of percentages, incomes taxes, and simple interest. Your postings in the discussion will be in two parts:
Part 1 (must be completed before you reply to another student):
Choose ONE option below to post your initial response.
Option 1: The price of a color printer is reduced by 30% of its original price. When it still does not sell, its price is reduced by 20% of the reduced price. The salesperson informs you that there has been a total reduction of 50%. Explain why the salesperson is not using percentages properly. What is the actual percent reduction from the original price? Defend your answer by showing an example. Use complete sentences and proper grammar. You may upload pictures of your calculations, type in the discussion box, or record a video.
Option 2: A friend is working on their federal income taxes to submit for the first time. Describe to your friend the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction. Provide at least two examples of a tax credit and two examples of a tax deduction and the pros and cons of each. It may be helpful to visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov Links to an external site. to learn more information. Be sure to cite your sources and use complete sentences and proper grammar in your posting.
Option 3: You LOVE to go out to lunch with friends! You will usually go to lunch 4 times a week and spend $8 for your own lunch. How much do you spend on lunches in a year? You and your friends decide that you are no longer going to eat out, but bring your lunches when you guys get together. If you invested your yearly spending on lunches in a savings account, how much would you have after one year? Investigate a standard savings account at a bank to find the interest rate. What would you decide after a year? It is worth it to you to invest the money you would have spent in a savings account or go out with your friends to a restaurant. Be sure to cite your source where you found the interest rate and use complete sentences and proper grammar in your posting. You may upload a picture of your calculations, type in the discussion box, or record a video.
