Rationale
(state and support RQ’s and hypotheses)
Write about Natalie’s Second Chance, needing donations, standard request versus telling potential donators that even a penny will help, and how that will affect how much money Natalie’s will receive.
Research Question 1: Will the average amount of donation differ in the the EPH versus the standard request conditions? Research Question 2: Will the condition to which participants are exposed (EPH vs. SR have an effect on the level of financial need they feel Natalie’s shelter is in).
Hypotheses
Hypothesis 1: A larger percentage of target individuals who receive a request for a charitable donation that includes and “Even a Penny Will Help” (EPH) strategy will donate in comparison to the individuals who receive only a standard request for a charitable donation.
Hypothesis 2: Target individuals given the EPH request will feel that the level of financial need for Natalie’s shelter is higher.
Hypothesis 3:
Hypothesis 4: Target individuals who have made a charitable donation previously will donate more money than those individuals who have never made a charitable donation before.
Methods
(descriptives for the people sampled, our project procedure & our an explanation of our variables and how we tested them)
A total of 439 participants completed the survey. Of these participants, 240 (54.7%) were female, 194 (44.2%) were male, 2 (0.5%) were transgender, and 3 (0.7%) identified as other. The standard request was randomly provided to 216 of the 439 (49.2%) individuals, while 223 (50.8%) participants received the “Even a Dollar Will Help” request. The average age of the participants was 28.16, and the range was 18-87 years old. The race/ethnicity of the sample was 73.1% (n=321) White, 17.1% (n=75) Asian, 4.8% (n=21) Hispanic or Latino, 2.3% (n=10) Black or African American, 0.2% (n=1) Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 0.2% (n=1) American Indian or Alaska Native, and 2.1% (n=9) other.
Results
(this will be the paragraphs in the format provided in the lectures and lab slides)
Research question 1 asked if the average amount of donation would differ in the Even a
Penny will Help versus the Standard Request conditions. An independent samples t-test was
conducted to compare request type in terms of average donation. Although the average
amount donated was lower for the EPH (M=9.43, SD=11.23) than for the standard request(M=15.89 ,SD=18.73) the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant,t(75)=-1.895 p=0.062 d= -0.37. In response to RQ1, the data indicate that the average amount of donation does not differ more than would be expected due to chance in the Even a Penny will Help versus the Standard Request conditions.
