Correlation and Causation are not the same thing. A correlation would be the relationship of one variable changing and the corresponding variable changes with it. Causation would be an event or occurrence that is believed to affect another event. I say believed, because this is an assumption before analyzing the factual data. When examining this data, one should consider that there could be other underlying conditions that are affecting the event.
When using correlation with variables, there can be outliers. This is similar but not the same as relational events. However, it does not mean that that outlier is the cause of change in the numbers. A third possibility is that there is an unknown which is called a lurking variable.
The difference of the two are that Correlation is caused by some sort of physical action. Like Smoking increases your risk of lung cancer. Causation shows that data has some form of relatability but is not caused by an action. Demonstrated in the statement, smoking and alcoholism are link but one does not cause the other
