Mapping Research Questions to Data and Analysis

In preparation for your IRB, it is helpful to start thinking deeper and determine what statistics you will use to analyze the data in your study.

Use the table below to help map your research questions to the statistics tests you will use and the conclusions you hope to find.

Research question

Sources of data to answer question

What will you use to gather data? Will you use a specific survey? Will you use interview questions?

Analysis

Is your question related to “differences”? What statistics measure “differences”? Is your question related to “relationships”? What statistics measure “relationships”?

What “conclusion” do you hope to make?

Think about what you really want to answer in layman terms. This will help you determine if the statistics you select will answer your research question.

EXAMPLE

What is the relationship between teacher use of formative assessment practices and student achievement based on grade level?

Teacher survey: Self-reported use of assessment practices using a Likert-type scale to measure the frequency of use.

Student achievement will be reported in aggregate at the classroom level.

Two-way ANOVA because there are two independent variables.
