Assignment Specifications

Purpose

In this group assignment, students will need to work in co-operative groups, demonstrate their

knowledge and understanding of the topic through active online discussion and then apply this

knowledge through group collaboration to a unique publically listed company from the ASX. Students

will need to apply critical and analytical thinking skills and then compose a group report for final

submission.

Background

You were recently employed as a management accountant in a listed firm on the ASX. The Managing

Director of your company has formed a small taskforce to explore the possibility of implementing a

Balanced Score Card (BSC) system in the company. You are assigned to work with others in the

taskforce due to your management accounting background.

Required

Your group is required to prepare a report to provide advice on the suitability of the BSC for an ASX-

listed company, which is selected by your group. The company selected must be “unique” and it is

NOT allowed to be the same as another group.

NOTE - You must check your selected ASX listed company on shared excel sheet. If the company has

already been selected, then you must go back and select another ASX listed company.

HA2011 Management Accounting Group Assignment T1 2020

The report must cover the following key points:

a) A description of your company.

b) Calculation of Return on Investment (using net profit divided by total assets) and a discussion of

the ways to improve ROI.

c) A description of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and its key components.

d) A description of the ways the implementation of the BSC can improve the competitive

advantage(s) of your company.

e) A discussion and conclusion of the overall suitability of BSC to your selected company.

Assignment Structure

The report should include the following components:

• Assignment cover page clearly stating your name and student number (Use Holmes Template)

• An executive summary and table of contents (note executive summary must be before the

table of contents)

• A brief Introduction or overview of what the report is about.

• Body of the report with sections to answer the above issues and with appropriate section

headings

• Conclusion

• List of References based on the Harvard referencing style

• Appendix including your supporting material and Assignment Participation Table (as below)

NOT - The report should be grounded on relevant academic literature and all references must be properly cited and included in the reference list. To ensure that all students participate equitably in the group assignment and that students are responsible for the academic integrity of all components of the assignment, all groups need to include a table which identifies which student/students are responsible for the various sections of the assignment and include it in their report, right before the executive summary.

Assignment Participation Table

Assignment Section Student/Students

Note: This table needs to be completed and submitted with the assignment as it is a compulsory component required before any grading is undertaken.
