Major Speech 1
INFORMATIVE SPEECH
SLO #2. Upon completion, the successful student will locate appropriate sources and cite them correctly in a speech
Your task is to write and deliver a 5-minute informative speech. Choose an informative topic, do your own research and construct an original speech. Be mindful of improving upon your speech construction and delivery from your last speech.
How to construct your speech:
1) Choose your topic. Keep in mind the interest and knowledge of you and your audience.
2) Use the library and the Internet to search for five (5) credible sources. Credible sources include (but are not limited to): newspapers, magazines, books, original data from professional journals, and credible websites. PLEASE DO NOT use or cite Wikipedia or blogs, as they are not credible sources of information.
3) Organize your main points in a meaningful pattern (see Ch.’s 11 & 12).
4) Add evidence from your sources to support your main points and add any additional explanations, stories or examples. Be sure to cite sources in your outline and, orally in the presentation. Sources should be cited in MLA or APA format. For examples of MLA & APA citations, please consult the documents labeled “MLA examples” and “APA examples” on Canvas.
5) Write your outline using full sentences and paying attention to the correct format and include a reference page (see Ch. 13).
How to prepare for your presentation:
· Practice delivering your speech with your outline.
· You should rehearse enough for your delivery to be truly extemporaneous . So, rehearse a lot—in front of the mirror, in front of your family, in front of your friends…rehearse!!!
