WRIT 1133 Spring 2020
Major Paper 4: Policy Brief Assignment
As was mentioned previously, Major Paper 4 this quarter will be a well-researched and thoroughly supported Policy Brief on the local controversial issue you have selected and been researching this term. The document you create will describe why the issue is important to the members of your community, discuss research you have conducted, and offer your specific policy recommendations to help alleviate the problems related to the issue.
· An introduction of the issue that describes the problems surrounding it and explains why efforts to resolve those problems are important.
· A critique of the various policy options available (possibly including why the current approach is failing to resolve the problems).
· Your specific, practical policy recommendations, and a convincing explanation of how they will improve the problems related to the issue.
· A conclusion that looks forward at how this issue could progress in the future if your recommendations are/aren’t followed.
· A listing of the works you cited and would recommend for further reading (use APA formatting).
In addition, you will present this information in a format that skillfully uses graphic design features to aid your argument.
(Please look at the “Policy Brief Examples” and “Graphic Design Key Concepts” documents I’ve posted on Canvas for additional information about how you can best incorporate graphic design elements into your Policy Brief.)
An effective Policy Brief will be one where readers truly consider you to be an expert on this subject because of the high quality of research and analysis you offer, and the thoughtful recommendations you provide.
A rough draft of your Policy Brief will be due on Sunday, May 31.
The final draft of your Policy Brief will be due on Sunday, June 7.
