ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:

This essay is designed to help foster and document your argumentative writing skills.  Below are the essay requirements:

· Approximately 2-3 pages (400-600 words)

· MLA formatted

· This essay should be in your own words, except for quotes from the textbooks and handouts we have used in class.

· No library or Internet resources should be used for paraphrasing or citing. Again, this is should be your own analytic analysis of the art.  This is not a research paper!

· You must include between 3 and 5 direct quotes in total to back up your thoughts. Those quotes must come from the three online articles I have linked to below:

Candide/Voltaire Connection

TOPIC:

As we discussed in class, Voltaire was a controversial writer in his time. As he challenged societal norms regarding philosophy and religion, he was often seen as a troublemaker.  By using satire, he alarmed and shocked readers.  In fact, some of his works were banned, and he was forced out of Paris because of his “scandalous” writing.  Voltaire’s Candide is a reminder that throughout the centuries, art has often pushed society’s buttons. 

Essay Question:  Should a work of art (including music, theatre, film, literature, music, visual art, animation, video games) ever be banned?  Why or why not?  Please explore your answer fully using specific examples of controversial artistic creations to back up your thoughts.
