Implied consent is when there is a life-threatening emergency or when the patient is unconscious or unable to respond. An example of implied consent would be if a women was involved in a major car accident and had internal bleeding as a result. In this emergency, she needed surgery as a result of her injuries in order to survive, this would be implied consent. Even though the women is not able to physical state that she would like the doctor to perform the surgery to save her life, it is implied. Documentation is a crucial part of informed consent. This is the major difference between informed consent and implied consent. In informed consent documentation is always recorded and a signed document by the patient acknowledging all the risks involved in the procedure are signed and understood by the patient. Implied involves no documentation. It is implied the patient would like to be treated to fix any issues they might have especially in life threatening emergencies. In informed consent all patients have the right to know and understand any procedures being performed. Their are four points of informed consent. The first is the nature of any procedure and how it is to be performed. The second states any risks involved and expected outcomes of the procedure. The third is any other methods of treatment and the risks they involve. Lastly, the risks associated with the procedure is no treatment is given. It is the responsibility of the health care provider to make sure the patient understands as well as obtaining the informed consent. An example of informed consent would be a patient that is getting ready to undergo heart surgery. The patient will be given an informed consent document to sign acknowledging the procedure and any an all risks that are involved with the procedure.
