A. Hook: In today’s materialistic world, we are wasting a lot of resources and being a little selfish.

B. Background: As a international student, I’m surprised that there are so many volunteering opportunities here. I think that this is a good sign, because it’s overlooked in my money-driven country. It can prepare core values for the future generation and help the society in a nonprofit way.

C. Thesis: Students could participate more in volunteer work and develop a habit of giving back to the community. This is because they can help others or environment, learn to be more selfless and get involved with the society.

II. Main Claim 1: Students can help the environment through volunteer experience.

 A. Sub-claim 1: They can clean up national parks and beaches. This also allows them to explore the nature and their country at the same time. 

 B. Sub-claim 2: Another way is volunteering at local animal shelters. This helps these facilities to operate because most of them are nonprofit and lack resources to hire workers.

III. Main Claim 2: Students can help other people.

 A. Sub-claim 1: There are a lot of places that always need help in organizing food drives, or even just giving out food and drinks.

 B. Sub-claim 2: It doesn’t require special skills or experience. There are all kinds of positions that are suitable for students.

IV. Main Claim 3: Volunteering is beneficial to the students.

 A. Sub-claim 1: They can practice and develop social skills, also meet new people with common interests.

 B. Sub-claim 2: It helps develop a sense of social responsibility.

V: Main Claim 4: There aren’t enough volunteers in the U.S., promoting this habit in students helps the society in long-term.

 A. Sub-claim 1: According to the Corporation for National Community Service, only 77.4 million Americans volunteered, which is about 25%.

 B. Sub-claim 2: Volunteering is a way for them to gain real-life working experience, which also helps their future career.
