Net Neutrality: The Technical Side of the Debate: A White Paper by Jon Crowcroft

This article explores many basics of the network and gives a glimpse into IP evolving into something so much greater. Mr. Crowcroft believes that wireless network grouping is a joke and there is no use of experts to work on front-end by giving priority services. He also points out that when using a cellphone, it costs more to send voice calls than using GSM, considering it is cheaper. There is a lot of resistance from legacy service providers towards the pressure coming from cell network providers. In regard to the Universal IP Service, nowadays it is not as universal when it comes to core connectivity services. There is competition in between many ISPs and they have used techniques to gain more audience by offering better tools and lower prices but in the light of economy, Mr. Crowcroft questions his audience where it is fair in the field of net neutrality to draw the line and define IP. He states the following neutralities:

·         Connectivity Neutrality as “w.r.t end to end to end service at each layer”

·         Performance Neutrality for SLAs in a measurable, comprehensible and transparent manner

·         Service Neutrality for “new net services multihome, multicast, mobility” to differentiate until it becomes identical

·         Cross Layer Neutrality shows the process behind the coming togetherness of services and allowing consumers to pick their choice

Court Upholds Net Neutrality Repeal, With Some Caveats

Federal Communications Commission had a strong hold on state governments and local governments by denying them to set their own net neutrality rules. This was until it was voted to deregulate the tight regulations companies had on consumers. This will derive more innovative ideas and prosper US economy with broad and open internet connection. The F.C.C made the decision to provide consumers with free internet and not blocking any website from being accessed and put a halt to internet being treated as a utility. However, there are concerns the appeal court asked to reconsider such as the technique of low-income customers’ subsidies being handled. Additionally, there needs to be proper management of internet infrastructure now that consumers are struggling in accessing online content. There are pros and cons to this appeal court’s decision over net neutrality and in both ways the community including businesses are impacted greatly.
