An applied research study differs very obviously from a traditional dissertation. The article selected for review, “Developing a statewide training curricula plan for a non-profit organization with emphasis on action research”, looks further into action research. “It adds the promotion of change to the traditional research purposes of description, understanding and explanation. Improvementand involvement are central to action research” (Robson and McCartan, 2015, p. 199).   

            The following dissertation is an action research dedicated to creating a training module for a non-profit organization. The problem Smith found was the fact that non-profit organizations are not able to keep up with the trends of a successful business because of low resources and keeping staff skill levels current.  Smith defines her study as a “Collaboration between the researcher and participants allows the participants to pause, reflect, and take corrective action during the course of the project” (Smith, 2013, p.3).

The purpose of the study is to identify competencies of an Ohio based non-profit, make a training plan, and guide staff to determine worker’s skill level and train them from there. Smith used the experiences of Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA) executive directors to guide her study, and they were ultimately her participants. She and another assistant was able to go through the interviews and code and triangulate the data. The biggest issue for the researcher was the assumption aspect. For instance, assuming all if the interviews given were credible, data had definite competencies and that the study would be useful to all non-profits (Smith, 2013).

This study contributes the thought that my own dissertation could actually be useful as an applied research. My dissertation seeks to understand why technology in the management office of a K-12 district would be useful. After analyzing this study, I have learned that applied research can be implemented with a small portion of a company and not as a whole. This takes extreme detail but easier to navigate with a smaller amount of people.

The field of counseling has continued to evolve into an evidence-based practice. Not only needing statistics on outcomes for the insurance companies that pay the bill but their clientele wanting to know that their commitment to the program they get admitted willing help with the problems they have presented with in treatment. Focus groups have begun to be the standard of applied research that has been utilized to gain the information needed to determine if the program is meeting the needs of the clients. The one salient point made by Elliott & Jordan (2010) is the researcher needs to be open to all “ revisions and/or discarding of conceptual categories (p. 35)” should they arise in the data collecting process.   

Kress & Shoffner (2007) utilized the use of focus groups and present that they can be useful when assessing the client’s needs, program evaluation, and outcomes to name a few. The need to share the information is the basis of the use of focus groups and it allows for changes if needed to be done in a rather rapid process. Robson & McCartan (2015) discuss the idea that research is never done in a vacuum there is always others that are affected by the research even a dissertation is supervised by a committee.

 The interest I had in this article is that the use of focus groups would be ideal for the applied research I have been looking into in the field of counseling. Spirituality and the integrating of this next force to be dealt with in the counseling forum. The tool would be useful in the development of the therapeutic relationship which is the basis of all counseling therapy. Treating of the whole person body, mind, and spirit allowing for the open forum of what spiritual background both the client and the clinician originate from in their respective lives. The information gathered in the limitations section of the study brought up some issues that I as a researcher would need to address. Focus groups are immensely helpful for the gathering of data but the translating of the information could be an issue which Kress & Shoffner (2007) stated could be eliminated by the use of audio/video taping. This would allow for the synthesizing of the data with regards to the actual client and what they may have meant when they answered a question on the questionnaire in the focus group.
