HCM 320 Milestone One Template

Use this template to compile important information and resources for your final project presentation.

1. Public Health Issue Topic: Identify the public health issue you will use as a basis for your final project presentation. Briefly describe why you choose this topic.

I would choose healthy communities as one of the four factors and more specifically obesity in children within the country. The reason behind choosing it is the increasing number of obese children and it being a good topic to examine about. I also wanted to know about health factors that affect growing of obese children.

2. Economic Forces: Briefly describe some economic forces related to your public health issue.

Macroeconomic Forces: examples of macroeconomic factors that could lead to obesity is decreased income by the parents of the children. Low levels of income can be caused by unemployment and high cost of living which leaves the parents with less cash to cater for the diet of the children. Additionally, high cost of living may make it difficult for the parents to afford the healthcare of their children contributing to obesity.

Microeconomic Forces:

Cheap fast foods that lead to increased demand of the foods contributing to obesity. Additionally, career parents who often do not have time to spend with children and cook for them always prefer buying chunky foods which can contribute to obesity.

3. Key Regulation Policy: Determine economic policies or regulations that currently apply to your public health issue.

Use of supplemental nutrition assistance which helps in feeding children on monthly basis. Additionally, child and adult care food program offers federal funding to state to reimburse providers for the cost of providing nutritious meals and snacks to children.

The national school meals and snack programs by helping children participate in lunch and breakfast program.

4. Benefits and Consequences: Identify the perceived benefits and consequences resulting from the legislation supporting your public health issue.

The legislation has led to increased awareness of childhood obesity and publicizing it as a matter of concern.

Additionally, the legislation has made it better for the government to supply nutritious foods to children in schools for different meals.

The legislation opposes purchase of processed foods which are contributing towards increase of childhood obesity.

5. Impact of Regulation or Policy: Describe the economic impact resulting from the legislation supporting your public health issue.

There is an estimated annual direct cost of $14.3 billion which implies future direct annual costs since all children who are obese might turn to obese adults. It may also lead to form of lost productivity from the affected children, and economic growth is forgone as people don’t work consecutively, mortality and disability.

6. References: Provide links or citations for three scholarly resources that you will use to support your ideas regarding your public health issue.
