M1Write-upQuestionsF2.pdf

Module 1

Since this module focuses on measurement it will be very important that mathematical conversions be clearly demonstrated throughout your problem write-up. For example, if you are converting 28 yards to meters, you must track your calculations with cancellation of units like this:

or like this:

(28 yards) x 0.9144 meters/ 1 yards = 25.6 meters

Refer to the M1A2 assignment for further typesetting directions.

The problem you must solve is:

Simeon wants to redo the floor of his living room. He will lay down a carpet pad, a carpet, and

then he will apply a Scotchgard stain block to the entire carpet. He wants to estimate how

much this home improvement will cost.

Key facts:

- The dimensions of the living room are 13’2” x 15’8”.

- Carpet pad sells for .32 / ft²

- The carpet sells for $14.99 / yd²

- Scotchgard sells for $25.99 for a 2 liter jug

1) Find the area of the living room is square feet. Use as many digits as you can during your

calculations. Round your final answer to the nearest foot.

2) Determine the cost of the carpet pad. Since Simeon is just estimating, assume you can buy

the exact amount

3) Determine the cost of the carpet, again assuming you can buy the exact amount. Note you’ll

need to convert the carpet area to square yards.

4) If 1 gallon of Scotchgard covers 180 ft² of carpeting, how many jugs will Simeon have to buy?

5) What is the estimated cost of his floor remodel project?
