I feel that drug courts are the solution to addressing nonviolent drug offenders.

Drug courts that are ran effectively, can curb drug use and distribution with insight and prevention.

If drug courts are ran effectively, without intervention from outside sources such as corruption, drug distribution and use can be drastically reduced. “Drug courts are specialized court docket programs that target criminal defendants and offenders, juvenile offenders, and parents with pending child welfare cases who have alcohol and other drug dependency problems” (DRUG COURTS, 2012). Corruption, on both sides of the law, has made convictions for drug offenses harder to get. With increased use of social media many good and bad things have come to light in the recent years highlighting these issues. Many drug courts are heading towards programs such as drug counseling, treatment, and prevention for nonviolent offenders. “As an effective alternative to incarceration, Louisiana drug courts are demanding programs that require frequent and random drug testing, intensive treatment, judicial oversight, and community supervision and support to assure the best possible outcomes for offenders with substance abuse problems” (lasc.org, n.d.). Many drug offenders just need help to get over addiction with guidance and mentoring so that they stay on a set path. Incarceration, in many instances, adds to the problem with drug users meeting other former dealers or connections in a correctional environment.
