Support services is key to daily operations in every facility. The kitchen partners with dietary services to ensure that residents in long-term care are receiving meals and nutritional support in the dining room area or delivered to rooms (McSweeney-Feld, 2017). Registered dietitians are utilized on the clinical side to maintain patients’ nutritional status ( The Role of Registered Dietitians in Long Term Care, 2018). It is important as individuals age; they continue to eat healthy diets and must also build diets from the group up for patients recovering from trauma or illnesses ( The Role of Registered Dietitians in Long Term Care, 2018). Another struggle of dietitians is as individuals reaching older stages of life, many factors affect a person’s ability or willingness to eat ( The Role of Registered Dietitians in Long Term Care, 2018).

Housekeeping plays a vital role in long-term care (Wenzel, 2021). Housekeeping ensures the facility is clean, resident’s rooms are clean, and maintenance of the building and property are addressed (McSweeney-Feld, 2017). Housekeeping helps to prevent the spread of germs and diseases, protecting frontline staff and keeping residents healthy (Wenzel, 2021). Clean furniture, bedding, and floors all play and important role in keeping residents and workers health (Wenzel, 2021). I have found from working in hospital patient experience that on HCAHPS surveys, when a patient’s room is clean, linens are clean, it helps the patient to also feel clean.

opic Option 1 – Admission Processes, Requirements, and Roles

· Assisted Living Facilities

· Skilled Nursing Home

Assisted Living Facilities are available to adults who are 18 years of age or older who typically need assistance with activities of daily living “such as personal care, hygiene assistance, mobility, meal preparation, medication management and more” (Witt & Hoyt, 2022).  However, ALFs are not appropriate for all.  If a person has a severe cognitive impairment, behavioral symptoms such as wandering, have extensive medical needs, and/or require daily nursing services, then an ALF is not the LTC facility for them (Witt & Hoyt, 2022).  The admission process for ALF are as follows: “Facility Admissions Paperwork, Medical History and Physical, Negative Tuberculosis Test or Chest X-Ray” (Witt & Hoyt, 2022).

Skilled Nursing Homes are LTC facilitates that offer medical care to their residents.  Skilled Nursing Facilities are “generally intended for seniors with debilitating health issues or serious conditions that require frequent medical supervision and round-the-clock care” (Whitley, 2021).  The admission requirements for a SNF are as follows: a physician’s order for admission to a skilled nursing facility, physician’s order for medications and treatment, medical history and physical, state-required form, negative tuberculosis test or chest x-ray, skilled nursing facility admission paperwork, and financial assessment paperwork” (Witt & Hoyt, 2022).
