Job of the Descriptive Essay:

· Creates a vivid picture of a person, place, or thing.

· Reveals meaning through a personal story

· Uses detailed, sensory observation.

· Employs the power of language and all the human senses to bring a subject to life.

Topics:

In 2017, Houston received a devastating visit from Hurricane Harvey. More recently, Imelda reminded Houstonians why Houston is dubbed “the Bayou City.” Using descriptive language write about your experience with either force, something you saw on the news, the impact the hurricane left on the city, etc. The idea is to describe the event in such a visceral way that it becomes palpable.

Tips:

· Share an anecdote.

· Use descriptive and figurative language.

· Figurative language includes metaphors, similes, personification, and hyperbole.

· Utilize concrete images to describe the subject.

· Show the reader what you want them to see instead of telling them. Make them SEE it!

· Telling simply states a fact. The car is old.

· Showing describes with vivid detail. The upholstery had seen better days; there were cigarette holes in the seats, several places had bald patches that were so thin the foam beneath was starting to show wear and tear as well. Even the driver’s seat had given up years ago and anyone determined to commander the vehicle had to sit carefully to avoid being poked by the spring protruding through the fabric.

Final Draft Requirements:

· Your essay should be 4 full pages. Any submission less than 4 pages will receive a 0. I will stop reading at the end of 5 pages and you will lose points.

· Double-spaced

· 12-point Times New Roman font

· 1-inch margins

· Full and complete heading including your name, date, class, assignment and title.

· Documents missing a heading will automatically lose 10 points.

Criteria for a successful essay include:

· Clear thesis statement in the introduction

· Logical organization that includes effective topic sentences and transitions between ideas

· Well-developed opening and closing paragraphs

· Few sentence level errors (grammar and spelling)
