LRA 2: Refining your Topic and Finding Sources
1. As of now, which global issue are you most interested in exploring through your research this semester? (1-2 sentences) A global issue that I would be most interested in exploring through my research this semester is systemic racism and racial discrimination within the United States.
2. As of now, which 'contemporary conflict' within this global issue have you chosen to focus your research on? Please be as specific as possible. If it has changed since LRA 1, explain why. (2-3 sentences) A site of conflict that I have identified is racial discrimination. Racial discrimination continues to be prominent in the labor market. “An experiment carried out in Chicago and Boston during 2001 and 2002 shows that resumes with “white-sounding” names, whether male or female, were much more likely to result in call backs for interviews than were those with “black-sounding” names (even though the resumes were otherwise identical).”
3. a. Revise and expand upon the summary you wrote in LRA 1 to produce a 2-paragraph summary of A SPECIFIC time period in the history of the people/place you have chosen to focus on. Choose the time period that you think is most relevant for understanding the roots of a current conflict. Note: If your exploration has taken you to a different people or place since LRA 1, write 1 paragraph summarizing the general history, and one paragraph focusing on a specific time period within that history. Racial discrimination has a very rich and thorough history in our world and there are several specific time periods which contain key events. The United States Civil War was a key event in our history which depicts a life altering moment in terms of slavery. The Civil War began in 1861 and concluded in 1865 which resulted in the end of black slavery.
Another specific time period in our history which is suitable for this topic was the Civil Rights Movement which lasted from roughly from 1954 to 1968. During this time, activists worked toward providing people of color, specifically African Americans, with basic legal and human rights within the United States.
3.b. Based on this specific historical context, please write 2 historical research questions, which you are going to try to answer through your research this semester . Note: a strong historical research question will focus on: How? Why? Causes? Consequences? Patterns? Anomalies? How did different people experience this? And it will have a specific who, what, where, when. See the Pocket Guide for tips.
What caused the initial act of slavery within the United States, and why were African Americans the target?
What were some consequences of disobedience in terms of slavery back then and how can they compare to modern day racial discrimination?

The main argument of this book is to analyze the history of civil rights between the first and second wars. Also, the article says that both the traditional and revisionist works have focused on strains of civil rights politics that appear to anticipate "Brown", and thus have suppressed alternative visions of that politics.
