LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

Love and friendship are very important recurrent themes in human relations. They are common in many social situations. These concepts are not necessarily interchangeable but are definitely related. For people to be truly in love there must be an element of friendship in their relationship. Friends must also love each other to a certain degree in order for their bond to be truly meaningful in the context of modern society. Love and friendship have to do with exercising a degree of altruism and treating another person as selflessly as possible.

The film Once is a very important showcase of love and friendship. An argument can be made that the musician and the girl in the film are friends and there is an element of love to their relationship. They meet randomly in the streets and instantly hit it off. The musician notes that he has been lonely and is happy to finally have someone that he can talk to. This is a very important paradigm of friendship. True friends usually serve to fill a certain void in the life of an individual. This is a void that seemingly cannot be filled by any other material thing or just any other person. The story covered bridge captures the love between Lena and her husband who always has the different aspect with her about having a baby. However, after the near-death experience. She finally realizes that her husband is the only person who will always be with her side. No matter how much conflict they had before, in that moment, the love become the most valuable bridge that connect them tightly. (Kingsolver, p. 50). This is a statement that is a direct criticism of her thought before. From the point of view of the story, the physical weaknesses did not matter because she finally know the love is higher than any other things. It is glad to see they forgive each other at the end of the story. Such is the nature of truelove. True love does not necessarily look at the weaknesses of an individual. You are correct in that you want to treat your audience as intelligent and aware, but you also want to provide enough context for a reader unfamiliar with the text to make solid connections between the text and the message you hope to convey. An important aspect of true friendship and love is an element of uplifting other people. This is evident from the relationship between the girl and the musician in Once. When they meet the musician is scared to sing his own songs and sings songs by other people. However, the girl convince him to sing his own songs and they go as far as recording several CDs. The musician also helps the girl out with elements of her social life. In the end they are both better people for having met each other. This means that friendship and love bring out the best in people. People in the life of the musician may not have seen his talent and potential as a musician. However, the girl was able to see it and she went as far as expressing it. When they go out looking for a band to help with the recording one of the street band members asks the musician if he is any good at singing. The girl interjects and notes that he is great. Friendship means being able to give up one’s desires for the sake of the best interest of a friend. In Once the musician clearly has feelings for the girl. However, he is willing to recognize that she is married and is trying to make things work with her husband. To this effect he does not insist on her moving with him to London. Rather he is willing to allow her to live out her life and do what she thinks is best for her and her daughter. The girl also recognizes that the musician loves a girl in London. She even encourages him to go out and see her. The two of them were willing to venture into situations that may have been uncomfortable but in the best interest of the other. This means that friendship is rather selfless. It has to do with objectivity on one’s feelings and what is best for the other person. Comment by Nocton, Amy: Wonderful.

Friendship and love often lead people to think wishfully of other people. They always have an undertone of well wishing directed at the other person. “When the seasons changed, it never occurred to us to think to ourselves that this would be Great Mam’s last spring” (Kingsolver, 6). The narrator loves her great grandmother to the extent that she is not even thinking of the death of the great grandmother despite her being old. This is evidence that love and friendship can lead to a blinding effect. They lead people to think that they will continue to live in a state of euphoria with their loved ones for an extensive period of time. These emotions often blind people to the impending situations on the ground and the facts. Comment by Nocton, Amy: Wrong story! Love and friendship are integral elements of human social existence. At one point or another people develop these kinds of relationships. They are usually characterized by feelings of comfort when around the other person and mutual trust. These emotions also have to do with wanting the best for the other person at all times irrespective of what this means for the friendship or love. Friendship and love also help to bring out the best in people. Comment by Nocton, Amy: Good.

There are elements of this piece that I would love to use as a text to show other students in the future (may I?) That said, your text is unbalanced. When given the task of analyzing more than one text, it is the writer's job to provide as close to equal time for each text. You give many examples (EXCELLENT examples) from the movie, but your study of the story is incomplete and not entirely correct. Additionally, you do not quote from the text, which is a requirement for this essay. Lastly, you have two texts in the works cited that you don't mention in the body of the essay! You need to bring in outside pieces in order to attain the highest grade for this last essay! Don't be discouraged. You have some work to do, but the FANTASTIC paragraphs on the movie tell me that you are up for the challenge. I am excited for your final piece.
