Dear Ms. Smith:

The loss prevention concern opens doors to a host of additional problems presented in both the surveillance video as well as the interviews with employees present at the last known Showcase Products and Service possession of the scope.

To begin, despite signing ethics pledges specifically relating to use of company time and employee handbooks outlining appropriate break schedules, the employees in question consistently violated these policies. On a number of occasions during the short time window, all three employees were missing from their primary work areas for an extended period of time. Page 16 of the company handbook illustrates the requirement that “. . . employees should schedule breaks, two 15-minute periods, in the time following the first hour of their scheduled shift and not within the final hour of their scheduled shift.” Based on the reported information, all three employees were in violation of this regulation.

There also appears to be clear conflict (based on the surveillance) between the technician (Michael) and supervisor (Rachelle). This conflict was not reported to Human Resources and, based on testimony, is a fairly regular occurrence. This places significant liability on the company should an incident occur.

As there is no documented evidence that any individual was responsible for the loss of the scope, it would be unfair to punish the group of employees as a whole. Instead, I advocate for the brunt of the failure be placed on the supervisor’s shoulders for this loss. In addition to the problems previously listed, the contributions made by this supervisor historically are minimal but the liability of her actions and inability to manage even a small team of three individuals leads to the conclusion that she be removed from the position. If no suitable other position is available, she should be terminated with cause per company policy. The “with cause” designation is due to the heavy losses incurred by the company during her time as supervisor.

Thank you for your consideration and I am happy to discuss this matter in person should you desire.

Sincerely,

Caitlin Sharp
