LONG QUOTE FORMATTING ASSIGNMENT
Again, here are some more web resources to help you with your long quote formatting assignment. It is very important that you master this format, before you start writing your final papers. Long quotes are required in both papers two and three.
This is the link to the Purdue OWL Short and Long Quote Formatting website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/03/
This link explains the ellipsis: http://www.thepunctuationguide.com/ellipses.html
If the links do not work when you click them, cut-and-paste them into your browser. These are the same links from the news feed and 'content.'
SIX COMMON MISTAKES STUDENTS MAKE ON THE LONG FORM ASSIGNMENT:
1) Entire quote isn't indented far enough. It needs to be over one inch from the original margin.
2) Introduction and/or conclusion is written in the past tense. Always stay in the present tense.
3) Explanations following the quote are NOT indented. You only indent when you start a new paragraph. Since you can never, ever end a paragraph with a quote in this class, you will never, ever indent the line following a quote--long or short.
4) You do not use quotation marks in long quote format. The one inch indentation replaces the use of quotation marks.
Since you do not use your own quotation marks in long format, this effects the punctuation at the end. It comes before the citation.
5) Students forget to put in their MLA page numbers OR they fail to format them to match the rest of the paper. MLA PAGE NUMBERS should be in the same font and size as the rest of the paper. They should be located in the upper right hand corner--last name, space and then page number. They MUST be in the header--you cannot manually type them at the top of the page. You must use the 'insert page number' in Word to make them work properly.
Look up in the right hand corner. If you replace “Your Last Name” with your actual last name, then you will have it correct. Don’t forget to select it all and change it to the right size and font that matches the rest of your paper (I had to change it to 12pt, Times New Roman to match this handout, because the header doesn’t change automatically to match the rest of the paper.)
6) Students forget to use the ellipsis to remove some non-essential information from the center of the quote. Don't remove too little or too much!
