Situation: Adolescents at risk for violent crimes are provided with psychoeducation prevention techniques to lower the crime rates in New Haven, CT.

Provide a safe, trustful and supportive environment for everyone. Train LCSW, MSW interns and mentors on psychoeducation prevention curriculum. Apply for grant funding. Provide information to neighboring schools, police departments and court system about the program for referrals. Provide psychoeducation to adolescents about the justice system and their legal rights. Provide psychoeducation to adolescents on problem solving and coping skills to build on already acquired resiliency skills. Assign mentors to adolescents for support and guidance.

Adolescents between the ages of 12 to 18 years old who are suspected to engage in violent crimes or are on the verge of becoming part of the juvenile justice system. 2 psychoeducational groups; sessions running consecutively twice a week on a weekly basis for 8 weeks. Groups will be divided into ages of 12 to 15 and 16 to 18 years old. 10 adolescents per group sessions.

Adolescents will learn new ways of problem solving and resiliency skills to cope with stressors. Adolescents will learn to build healthy positive relationships. Adolescents will be assigned a mentor to guide in additional resources and referrals needed within the community. Adolescents will learn information about the justice system and how to advocate for their rights.

Adolescents will use new ways of problem solving and coping to improve resiliency after experiencing a stressor/ problem. Adolescents will establish healthy and positive relationships. Adolescents will use mentors for referrals such as but not limited to mental health services, therapy and substance abuse recovery programs. Adolescents will use their knowledge about the justice system and their rights to respectfully advocate for themselves.

Once the completion of the 8 weeks of psychoeducation prevention program, adolescents will refer other adolescents at risk for violent crimes or gang related activity to the program. There will be a reduction of violent crimes, gang activity related and re-incarceration in the community of New Haven, CT.
