Mopping the Floor
In his article, "Mopping the Floor While the Tub Overflows," Paul Leighton makes conclusive arguments in analyzing the issues that face the criminal justice system in the case. He argues that the approaches used do not consider the problems that surround Society in a manner that is solving the issue; rather, he argues that the criminal justice system considers these issues on a focus that addresses the problem through aspects that cannot work primarily because it does not consider the root causes of the problem such as the aspect of lack of education lack of access to healthcare lack of employment, poverty, and issues relates to the equitable access of resources.
He argues that the system needs to change to ensure that it can apply restorativSe justice practices, which would be able to target and repair the harm caused by different offenders and prevent future offenses in the same manner. This approach focuses on the issues placed on the community and the offender in the sense that it holds the offender accountable while also considering the issues in Society which may have led to the occurrence of the Crime. He argues that there should be an emphasis on the idea of dialogue between different stakeholders in the community, including the victim, the offender, and the community, in which case the Justice process should consider ideas or arguments from all these factors to come up with a conclusion that is considerate of every impact or every event that may have generated an environment suitable for the realization of the consequence.
The author makes an essential emphasis on the Importance of insurance. Communities are provided with different elements such as education, job training, and mental health treatment for different individuals or committed offenses. Therefore, this aspect should be offered in prison and also after they have been released, in which case the idea is to ensure that there is a smooth transition of these individuals into Society in a manner that appreciates the idea of change, which is expected from passing through the criminal justice system. This is an essential aspect since it can be analyzed that many offenders commit the same offense due to issues such as lacking opportunities to amass themselves into Society. Therefore, they feel left out, or they feel as if they do not have a place in the societies in which they are living in such case by providing an ideal environment for the rehabilitation of such individuals and societies, it can be possible to empower them to do better and serve the interest of their community within the boundaries of the law. In such a case, his ideas can be used to amplify the need for mental wellness and support people who have been incarcerated in the sense that these are vital aspects in improving the quality of life they will have out of prison. Hence, it can be argued that through his remarks, there can be possible recommendations on what can be done to empower incarcerated individuals, especially those in prison, for a long time.
Ideally, this will be a significant benefit to Society in the sense that they will be able to have a better and more accommodative safer community in the sense that when these individuals are rehabilitated, they can become upstanding members of Society and, in such, provide their talent skills or ideas to benefit their Society. From such aspects, rather than focusing solely on punishment and incarceration, there is a need to focus on the underlying issues that cause people to commit crimes. This approach reduces crime rates and creates a safer and more accommodative community.
