Unit learning outcomes

On completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and understanding:

· Apply knowledge, experience and critical understanding of certain theoretical and practical issues related to language assessment and accreditation;

· critically analyse existing assessment frameworks and accreditation frameworks to demonstrate the practical application of certain theoretical principles of assessment and accreditation;

What am I required to do in this assignment?

Produce a critical review of an ELT provider following an initial inspection and subsequent visit carried out by a recognised accrediting body. Your review will report the main issues outlined in initial inspection report and consideration of how these issues were addressed in the following inspections (eg its aims, purposes, principles and practices). The key objectives are for you to demonstrate the ability to:

· identify underlining themes outlined in previous inspection reports,

· critically evaluate the extent to which these were addressed,

· synthesise and interpret information from a variety of sources,

discuss how these issues could be dealt with in following inspections.

Is there a size limit?

The word limit is c1200 words, plus or minus 10%.

If you go beyond this it will not be considered and if you write less you are unlikely to cover all the essential points.

What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)

In order to pass Assessment 1 you will need to:

· Demonstrate a critical evaluation of a specific accreditation scheme ;

· Demonstrate critical understanding of certain internationally recognised accreditation bodies and the way they operate as well as their accreditation frameworks.

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?

To do well in this assignment, you will produce a cogent, structured report following the Harvard system of referencing, as if to an anonymous committee of interested, educated, but non-specialist readers.

The report will evaluate the implications of actions taken and the possible (unintended) consequences.

Use your understanding of best practices in ELT to discuss what the provider could/should/might do, or have done.

How does assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?

The first few weeks of the semester discuss quality in language teaching: how it is manifest, measured and documented from a range of perspectives, culminating in accreditation from a recognised awarding body such as the BC/English UK Accreditation scheme.

This task allows you to apply your knowledge and understanding in order to evaluate ways a provider responds to an inspection.

How will my assignment be marked?

Your assignment be marked according to the threshold expectations and the criteria on the following page. You can use them to evaluate your own work and estimate your grade before you submit.
