Simulation Grade

As specified in the syllabus, at the end of the simulation (Round 2) each team turns in a report as a team.

  • 10% of your team’s grade for each simulation is based on your team’s plan for Round 2, which is submitted before the simulation starts
  • 10% of your team’s grade for each simulation is based on your team’s performance/rank in the simulation (Round 2).
  • 80% of your team’s grade for each simulation is based on your team’s simulation report (based on Round 2).

*

Simulation Plan

  • Grading Rubric
  • Format followed 10%
  • The format requirements are that you enter the headings underlined in the report format, put your responses after the heading and that you responded to each question.
  • Explanation 90%
  • This grade is based on whether you submitted the plan on time; used the appropriate information for your Forecasts of Demand and Capacity Needs; interpreted the information correctly based on the text using tools such as Little’s Law; made correct decisions based on your interpretation; explained these decisions clearly.

PURPOSE of Report

The purpose is to: explain why you took the actions, and in retrospect whether you think you did the right thing. Your analysis of whether the action was the correct action should be based on class concepts to justify your conclusions. This analysis should be supported by data from your simulation and by your evaluation of this data.

Grading Rubric

  • Following format 10%
 SECTION Percent of Grade
Results 5%
Actions Taken 10%
Analysis   65% total
Conclusions &Reflections   10%

Format

10% of grade -- see format requirements

No cover sheet, team name and each team member name at top left corner.
Font is 12 pt, and it is single spaced with double space between paragraphs
Sections are titled and in BOLD as given in prior slide and below
Sections sequenced as given in prior slide and below.
Tables & graphs titled in sequence as referenced in the text (e.g., Table 1, or Figure 1 etc.)

*

Results

5% of grade -- 1 paragraph

State what place your team was in the class simulation (e.g., 1st). State your final cash balance.

*

Actions Taken

10% of grade -- 1 paragraph for each decision

Diary of decisions made included as Table or Figure titled: History of Decisions Made. Downloaded from the web site by clicking on the “HISTORY” button at the bottom of your main screen with the picture of the shop on it. Decisions are organized by Day, Parameter and New Value.
1 paragraph per decision stating why your team made that decision. For example, “Day 50: station 2 scheduling rule changed pri2 because …”

Analysis

Total of 65% of grade

Download data into Excel from the simulation by clicking on machines, queues or other decisions in the web site that shows your shop. Use this to create run charts of machine utilization, order arrivals and order completions and queue size. Select appropriate run charts and include them in the report. You can combine them if appropriate -- 15%
Based on the run charts you made, state which of the actions taken were correct and which were wrong and why. Be sure to reference the chart that supports this analysis. 1 or 2 paragraphs -- 25%
Based on the run charts you made, state which actions you should have taken that you did not take and the day you should have taken them. Explain why. Reference the chart that supports this. 1 paragraph per day the decision should have been made. For example: “Day 56 – should have added capacity at machine 3 because utilization was increasing and jobs were delayed from completing on time as shown in Run Chart 1 and Run Chart 2 by comparing Day 50 to Day 56.” – 25%

Conclusions and Reflections

10% of grade

Based on your analysis above state what data the team should have analyzed during the simulation and what decisions they should have been preparing to make. ----- 1 paragraph.
Evaluate the performance of your team as a decision making unit. What were the difficulties if any in getting organized and making decisions. State how you can improve your ability to analyze problems and make decisions. ---- 1 paragraph
