Sample Literature Summary: Environmental Psychology Effects on Mental Health Job Satisfaction and Personal Well Being of Nurses

PSYC A326: Environmental Psychology

Summer 2020

Dr. E. L. Zucker

A Study done by Tavakkoli et al

Where?

Khatamol-Al-Anbia hospital located in the third district of Tehran municipality

When?

2015

Why?

To see if job-related stress can be reduced in nurses by changing the environment in which they work

Why Nursing is so Stressful

Working pressure

Nurses are considered the man power of the hospital

Main service providers of the health care system

Low Job Satisfaction

A big problem in the nursing services management is that nurses exhibit low levels of job satisfaction

Examples include:

Leaving work early

Missing work

Therefore, this research compares mental health, job satisfaction, and wellbeing of nurses depending on their working environment

Participants

The sample included 250 male and female nurses with the age range of 23- 47 years who were randomly selected from Khatamol-Al-Anbia hospital located in the third district of Tehran municipality

All participants had tertiary education

188 women

62 men

100 married

150 single

These participants were separated into 3 groups

Baseline and Confoundings

All participants were asked to fill out a depression and anxiety questionnaire at baseline

The researchers attempted to prevent some confounding variables by making the job situation, work volume, and salary equal between all participants

Group 1

n= 63

Worked in the basement of the hospital

Design was not in accordance with psychological-environmental principles

Cold environment

No access to designed environment

Group 2

n= 100

Worked in a small garden simulated area

Designed based on psychological principles

Group 3

n= 87

Worked where they can see the outside designed environment through a distant window

General Health Questionnaire

The questionnaire of general health arbitrated to Goldberg& Hillier

Screens for non-psychotic mental disorders

28 questions on a 4- point Likert scale and 4 subscales about:

somatic symptoms

anxiety

insomnia

social dysfunction

severe depression

Personal Wellbeing Questionnaire

Made by Smith and Kendal (1996)

20 items scored with a 5-point Likert scale

Job Satisfaction Index

Standardized in 2002

8 items, each of which asks about one field with a 7-point Likert scale

How it was studied

The current research has been performed three months after designing the hospital environment

some nurses used that simulated garden

some looked at the simulated garden from a far distance

the others were located in the basement with no view of garden

How it was Studied cont.

The indexes of mental health, job satisfaction, and wellbeing of the nurses working in this hospital were compared considering the equality of all working situations and only based on the differences between working environment indexes

Results

Nurses who were working in an environment with interior design reported significantly higher general health compared to those working in an environment with no interior design

And those nurses working in a garden simulated area reported higher general health than those that just viewed it from a distance from their workplace

The nurses who worked in the garden simulated area and the nurses who were able to see the garden from their work station reported having less anxiety than the nurses who worked in the basement

Results cont.

A greater level of job satisfaction was also reported for nurses who worked in the garden simulated area and those who could see the garden from their work station than those who worked in the basement with no interior design

The mean wellbeing index was also higher in nurses who worked in the garden simulated area and nurses who could at least see the garden than the nurses working in the basement with no interior design

Results cont.

While there was a significant difference between those who worked in the simulated garden area and those who worked in the basement, there was not a significant difference between those who worked in the garden and those who were able to see the garden from their work area.

Results cont.

Although nurses that were working in the basement were more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety than those who were not, the social performances among all nurses was the same

What does this mean?

Because nursing is one of the most important positions in the society and the health of the nurses affects the general health of the patients, we should improve their mental health, job satisfaction, and wellbeing through the use of naturalistic views

This can be done by applying the environmental building principles to hospitals and work places for nurses to reduce depression and anxiety and to increase mental health and job satisfaction
