Literature Review

The final paper will be a 5-page review of the literature on a topic related to aging.

What is a literature review?

A literature review is a comprehensive and concise review of the literature. It is not merely a summary of individual articles, but an integrated review of the ideas and findings presented in the literature.

How many sources do you need?

A truly comprehensive literature review includes ALL of the research on a topic. This is not realistic given the time and page constraints of this assignment. You should ideally review as many sources as needed to fully support your ideas. Ultimately, you will need at least 5 but an ‘A’ paper will likely include 10+.

Tips to get you started:

When writing a literature review, start with a thesis and develop an outline of ideas. Once you have an outline, look at which sources address each point. DO NOT SIMPLY SUMMARIZE ONE ARTICLE AFTER THE OTHER (this is not an annotated bibliography). Review both sides of an argument – it is okay if all the research does not support your thesis. It is often important to address both sides to present a full argument in support of your ideas.

Papers must be in APA format and should include the following:

· Cover sheet

· Running head

· Page numbers

· In text citations

· Reference page

Additional points:

· Proofread, proofread, and then proofread again. (Then ask a friend to proofread for you.)

· Do not plagiarize! Plagiarism will result in an automatic failing grade on the paper and may lead to further sanctions as outlined in the University handbook.

· Do not use quotes. You should summarize each piece of literature in your own words.

· Papers must be printed and submitted in class. Late papers will lose 10 points for each day late.
