Your response to the following prompt should be submitted using the link provided in the Assignments folder by 11:30 AM, Wednesday, September 14th.
The response should:
· Be submitted as a DOCX or PDF file.
· Cite specific passages from Ecotopia by author’s last name and page number; for example,
(Callenbach 47). If you are using an alternate edition of Callenbach’s novel, or an electronic edition without pagination, then please note this for your TA before you begin your response. If you are using an electronic edition without pagination, then cite by the author’s last name; for example, (Callenbach).
· Be 400 to 600 words long. You may write beyond this, but the writing must be 400 words minimum to be accepted for our course. Do not stop short, for example, at 200 or even at 390 words. If you need help reaching 400
words, then please contact your TA for assistance.
· Be organized as more than a single paragraph. Your reader needs to be able to follow and
understand your thoughts.
· Be in paragraph format as opposed to an outline, numbered points, and so on.
· Respond to the prompt and show evidence of thought.
In our discussion of Republic, the question was often raised whether or not the policies of the kallipolis, though interesting conceptually, could be realized feasibly in the real world.
I would suggest that while Ecotopia does present policies, such as recycling, that have now become commonplace, many of the policies aimed at communal life, for example the system of family living or the war games, might again raise the same question that we often asked in relation to Republic.
First, pick a communal policy from Ecotopia and show how Callenbach presents this policy as utopian in his writing; that is, how does the writer show the policy as beneficial to the entire community.
Second, present your own argument as a response to Callenbach’s book in terms of if we would consider such a policy to be utopian were it to be instituted in the real world.
Grading:
8-7 points: Both ideas and examples are strong and build upon class ideas.
6-5 points: Either ideas or examples could use more development, though the response, overall, builds upon class ideas.
4-3 points: Both ideas and examples could use more development. Moreover, the response repeats rather than builds upon class ideas.
Please let myself or your TA know if you have questions about the prompt or as you are writing.
