APPENDIX A

Literature Review Elements

For Addressing Literature Review and Research Question Section of Article Critique

Elements of Article Literature Review:

1. Introduction This section introduces the reader to the topic or problem. It can often describe the

problem, when and how it occurs and why it is of concern to the reader.

2. Key Points/Definitions

 As you begin to examine the literature, look for patterns and results of studies that agree, or disagree. Look for patterns in the way researchers use

terms and the kinds of problems they have in defining variables or

analyzing data.

 Look for key terms and how researchers define certain subjects.

 Often there are professional disagreements about how to define or measure certain concepts or terms. At times researchers disagree about the best

theory or explanation of certain phenomenon. Is there any of this?

APPENDIX B

Required Elements of Article Literature Critique

A. Literature Review and Research Question

a. What are the key issues in this area? What are the key terms in this area? Are there any debates or disagreements? (See Appendix A for more information).

b. What are the research question(s) and hypotheses of the study?

B. Methodology a. Design

1. What specific type of design was used in the study? 2. Did it fit with the research question? 3. What are the strengths and weaknesses of using this design? (Be sure to

include a discussion of internal validity).

b. Sample 1. What specific type of sampling strategy was used in the study? 2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of using this strategy? (Be sure to

include a discussion of generalizability).

3. How many people were involved in the study? What characteristics are known about them?

4. What criteria were used for inclusion or exclusion? c. Measurement

1. Identify the variables in the research question/research hypothesis 2. How was each variable measured? (Make sure you cover both the IV and

DV)

3. How well was each variable measured (make sure to include a discussion of reliability and validity).

d. Procedures 1. What kind/type of research was this? What sources of data were used?

How was data obtained? By whom? When?

e. Results 1. What statistical test(s) were used? 2. Did they address the research questions? 3. What were the results?

a. Did they achieve statistical significance? b. Were there any noticeable trends?

C. Discussion 1. Who might be interested in the results and why?

D. Limitations and Improvement a. What methodological issues (design, sampling, and measures) might have influenced the

results?

b. What were some problems encountered during the course of the study? c. How could the study been improved? (Include suggestions for design, sampling etc.).
