Literary Essay Assignment Sheet

· Typed

· Double-Spaced

· Times New Roman, 12 pt. font

· 1 inch margins

· AT LEAST 3-4 pages in length-Works Cited page not included in page count.

· MLA Format

· 2-6 reliable sources CITED within the essay and recorded on a MLA Works Cited sheet. The Work itself you are writing about does not count as a source. You need 2-6 in ADDITION to this.

· Assignment Goals: Students will write a critical analysis of a piece of literature from this course.

· Prompts:

Write an essay of at least 3-4 Pages in which you do one of the following:

Discuss how symbolism OR theme is used in the literary work or works (from the reading list) of your choice.

OR

Write an essay in which you discuss the character development in the literary work or works (from the reading list) of your choice.

Notes to Consider:

You can look at the reading list to see all we have/will read. If you choose to read something we have NOT gone over yet, you can read ahead, and I am happy to supply you with class notes ahead of time. Likewise, some selections are new and I have not decided how much I want you to read. If you are interested in one of these, email me!

DO NOT write about anything we have not or will not read. Only works on the reading list are eligible.

Likewise, For example, we only read PARTS of Excerpts of works most of the time. I do NOT want you to write about ALL of the piece...only what we have specifically been assigned in class. This is pretty much impossible to do in the time allotted. PLEASE heed this. I will make you rewrite the paper if this is the case.

Take the outline seriously! The more work you do on the outline, the easier and better off you are in the long run!

Below are guidelines for how you might find acceptable sources:

· Articles from reputable websites-REQUIRED. Any source from this type of website is fine.

· Another option, though not required, are Scholarly sources obtained through the LIBRARY DATABASES (INCLUDING BOOKS!)-OPTIONAL ( I just put this to give you Other options).

· Other Websites Approved by the Instructor

The references must be documented correctly according to MLA guidelines. See the aids for MLA documentation in Canvas in a Module called Documentation of Sources.

To document your reading links from this course, use the following as models.

“Title of Work.” Website Name. Date of Access. URL
