Theme identification and character analysis (some characters may not be human beings) 1. What is the main idea, message, or emotion expressed throughout the work? 2. What are the names of the characters, and what are the relationships between/among them? 3. What are their characteristics? (What are the characters like? In what light are they portrayed?) Structure (organization of story) and language, symbol, and detail analysis 1. What is the narrative voice of the story? (1st person=”I”, 2nd person=”you”, 3rd person=”he/she”) Why is the narrative voice significant? 2. What is the narrative structure? (How is the story told? Are there flashbacks or other alterations in the timeline?) 3. What is the dialogue like? (Do characters speak to each other directly? 4. What are the possible symbols in the story? (What things, places, events, names, or recurring elements may be symbolic and what do they possibly represent?) Remember that seemingly insignificant details that catch your attention may be symbolic.
