Assignment 1: How Do I Write a Literary Response?

Literary Response Assignment Guide

Your first assignment in ENC 1102 is the Literary Response paper.

Your response paper should have the following components:

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Include the author and title of the work.

B. Discuss one or two of the elements of the short story (symbolism, imagery, plot, character, setting, etc.) the

author uses in the story and how those elements inform your response.

C. Provide examples from the story in order to support your answer (this is also known as your thesis).

II. BODY

A. Begin by stating your general response to the piece of literature. Then explain why you felt as you did.

B. Quote or summarize specific details and passages that back up your response. You could also include personal

experiences that affected your reading.

III.CONCLUSION choose from one or a combination of the following:

A. summarize your overall response B. draw a conclusion about the work’s significance to you C. or if your feelings about the story changed after contemplating it, explain how and why your response has

changed.
