The theme of Literacy Narrative
I believe literacy is the understanding of meaning-making and making meaning in different modes of communication, such as reading and writing and the use of graphics. It is not limited to the processes of reading or writing, but it is the ways in which people comprehend and interact with reality. Literacy has been an important part of my life since childhood, and it defines how I perceive myself and the surrounding world. In this essay, the major focus will be to discuss how the process of reading and writing influenced my development as a communicator, with reference to the important people and events in my life.
Setting/Place/Age
My literacy process started in the warm embrace of my home, where books were considered as the part of the furniture. Both my parents were great lovers of books, and literature was always a major part of our home. It ranged from great books such as To Kill a Mockingbird to children’s books like Clifford the Big Red Dog. Story time was something special; my parents both would read to me stories before I went to bed; it was in my home that I first experienced the enchantment of stories and the importance of words.
Other than home, my elementary school had a great impact on my learning especially in literacy. The school was very much into creativity and freedom of expression and we used to be more experimental about the ways of communication. I remember that we were talking about stories in class, writing essays and even doing little plays. These were not just roles; they were opportunities for me to express how I felt about the stories and how the stories made me feel. The school environment helped me develop as a reader and writer since the home environment was fostered with literature.
