Title: Melancholy 1894 by Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch. Melancholy. 1891

The artwork shows a man brooding in the foreground, succumbed to sadness, with his body turned away from the scene that is causing him pain: a man and a woman who are standing on a jetty, in the background, about to embark on a boat. The couple may physically be there, on the pier, but the expressiveness of the painting seems to make no distinction between imagination and reality. Whether the man is simply imagining the two lovers going away or he is acutely aware that they’re nearby, is of no consequence. The pain he is feeling is just as real.

Melancholy art work is made in colors while Family Romance have several different types of line within the sculpture.

The most dominant element within this piece is line. There are several different types of line within the sculpture. The first is the line that the family is in, it goes from father to mother to son and finally to daughter, a procession that typically one would see as oldest to youngest as well as tallest to shortest. However, all the figures are the same height, which creates one straight line from head to head. This straight line is something that one would not expect when looking at a family with young children, one would typically expect that the line created by a family in this order to be a down ward slope, not perfectly straight across.
