Working Title: From Fiction to Function: Ethical Dilemmas of Artificial Intelligence in Science Fiction and Society
For my 4-part assignment series, I will examine the ethical dilemmas surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) as portrayed in science fiction and compare them to the real-world challenges emerging today. Stories like I, Robot and Ex Machina explore themes of autonomy, surveillance, and moral responsibility—increasingly relevant issues as AI systems become embedded in military, healthcare, and legal decision-making. This topic is appropriate for the course because it highlights how speculative fiction anticipates and shapes societal debates about technology and ethics. By analyzing fictional narratives alongside scholarly research, I aim to understand how science fiction serves as both a warning and a blueprint for technological development. A peer-reviewed article from the APUS Library, “Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: An Emerging Area of Inquiry,” emphasizes the urgent need for ethical frameworks to guide AI deployment, especially in high-stakes environments like defense and law enforcement.
