Life Span Writing Assignment

OBJECTIVES:

Through this assignment you will…

 gain knowledge about a particular topic in life span psychology

 gain experience using COM’s library

 become a critical consumer of information

 summarize and synthesize information in written form

REQUIREMENTS: You will write a minimum 4-page paper on your chosen topic, relating the information you have discovered about that

topic to the reader in a well-written manner. Your writing should be college-level and should reflect an understanding of

the topic based on scholarly research. The due date for your paper is listed on the Course Schedule, on the Assignment

itself, and in an Announcement on Blackboard.

The Life Span Writing Assignment will be worth a total of 150 points toward your final total.

You will be required to use at least 3 (but no more than 6) peer-reviewed scholarly research journal articles as

reference materials for this paper. These articles may be found on the College’s online research database. You may

NOT use an internet site as a reference! Only published, peer-reviewed, journal articles will be accepted. If you have

difficulty finding these articles, please contact the librarians – they are there to help you. Remember: we have our own

Virtual Librarian right in our course – UTILIZE THIS RESOURCE!

FORMATTING:

Your paper must 4 (full) pages long (not including reference page) and will consist of a creative title, introductory

paragraph, body, and conclusion (or summation paragraph).

 Creative Title: You should submit an original title that reflects your chosen topic in a witty and creative way. No

pressure here, just do something interesting!

 Introductory Paragraph: Your introductory paragraph should indicate your chosen topic as well as introduce

some background knowledge the reader may want to know before learning more about the topic. Define the

topic as you know it, and as you have discovered in your research.

 Body: The body of your paper should convey all information you believe the reader should know about your

chosen topic. Be sure that your writing is clear, concise, and flows logically from one sentence (and paragraph)

to the next. The Body should be broken down into logically organized paragraphs – not just one long paragraph.

It is up to you to determine what you want the reader to gain from your research. You should use proper MLA

or APA citations in the body (introductory and conclusion paragraphs included) of your paper indicating where

you received you information.

 Conclusion: Your conclusion (or summation) paragraph should summarize all that you have written in the body.

Your conclusion paragraph should logically follow from the body of the paper.

 Reference Page: (separate page, properly formatted) You must cite all of the research materials you actually

used in the course of writing this paper in either MLA or APA format. DO NOT put journal articles on your

reference page if you did not cite them in the body of your paper.

Be sure to cite your referenced material in the body of your paper, and ensure that the readers are well aware of when

you are citing referenced materials and when you are stating your own personal opinion.

Your paper should be formatted as follows:

 Title Centered above introductory paragraph

 Double-Spaced

 1-inch Margins

 Running Header with your Full Name, Paper Title, and Page Number

 Separate Reference Page properly formatted in MLA or APA Style
