Chapter 9 Topic: How Parents Help Teens Navigate Adolescence
Summary
For effective parenting, the parents need to practice control and oversight while also encouraging responsibility and independence. Parents should not disengage but should continue to take an active role in their teen children's life. The authors have noted four critical traits that indicate a positive parent-child relationship, which is: warm and close relationships, maintenance of open communication, being knowledgeable, and use of less strict control techniques. These four areas need to see appropriate limits where a parent provides support while also allowing the development of autonomy, which is highly valued by the teens.
On the other hand, in this stage of life, parents directly influence the teens as their role models. The parents model the ethical practices of their children. This indicates that they should be better role models.

The study looked into the association between parent-to-child communication and a child’s well-being. The study involved teens with an average age of 16 years. The study found out that female adolescents perceive the communication being more open than male adolescents did. The study also found out that there is an association between how a child perceives communication with their parents and their overall well-being. Their well-being is influenced by their perception of communication with their parents.
Figure 1: Shows the level of perceived well-being based on the nature of communication between teens and their parents.
The article was chosen as it supports the proposition that open communication between a parent and his or her teen child leads to more improved subjective well-being. Further research may need to look into whether subjective well-being is equal among male and female children. Asamenew Demessie Bireda and Jace Pillay (2016) conducted a study that indicated that perceptions of communication among male and female children vary.
The topic under chapter 9 that I feel will be better explained or understood if further research was done on it is Adolescent Development in the Context of the Home.
Chapter 6: Postpartum Depression
Summary
Following the birth of a child, at least 13% of the mothers will experience postpartum depression, which is a severe and persistent problem. In most cases, it is experienced by first-time mothers and will subside in a few days or weeks. It is more likely to occur within the infant’s first year of life. There are common symptoms such as loss of appetite, restlessness, mood swings, guilt, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia, among other symptoms. Rarely, some mothers may develop postpartum psychosis that is mainly about the failure to discern what is real and what is fake. Today, counseling and medical care can quickly help address the issue.

The article has looked into the problems that are presented by postpartum depression, especially when it comes to disruption of the mother-infant relationships. The authors have asserted that the disorder leads to risk to the cognitive functioning, socio-emotional, and neurological functioning of the infant in the first year of development. The authors have asserted that psychotherapeutic interventions need to be undertaken to identify the condition before it escalates.
Figure 2: A graph of the postpartum prevalence
The article has outlined the prevalence and the effects that may be realized by the infant in the first year of development. This indicates it is a severe disorder that needs to be addressed before it can escalate. Further, there should be research that will focus on the array of risk factors associated with the development of the disorder. This will help primary care providers estimate mothers who are likely to develop the disorder and intervene early enough.
In Chapter 6, we discussed the various aspects that come with becoming a parent. We mainly focused on postpartum depression. I am, however, on the opinion that, the ethical issue of designer babies would be better understood if more research was done on it.
