This poem is filled with glum emotions.

Describe how the men are suffering which leads to the gloomy disposition of the piece.

· 80 men to a room

· The cold temperature in the warehouse

· How others are treated vs them

· How their initial hope is broken

Describe initial thoughts and emotions of the men

· Living in Jamaica is like living in paradise, but they don’t realize until living in those harsh conditions

· They went to panama to make a better life for themselves and family

· Going to panama was a sense of hope

· Panama meant better financial situation

· They were prepared to work but unprepared to be mistreated

Elaborate on each topic in introduction paragraph

· 80 men in each room means being crammed= discomfort

· Cold temp in warehouse= lack of rest

· Seeing the Hispanics living ‘well’ and they are living in almost slave like conditions

· Hope is broken because of harsh conditions

· Depressed

Describe the overall tone of the poem

· Disappointment- they may not make as much as they initially assumed. The men were probably getting less pay than the Hispanics

· Despair

· Hopelessness- Giving up on their dreams of earning enough money to provide for their family and just wanted to be treated as humans

· They let go of their tangible wants and was wanting to be respected as men
