Objective: To recognize search tools appropriate for specific purposes.

To perform a search given an author, a journal, and a topic.

Activities:

1. Log in on Blackboard.

2. Click on Tools on the left side

3. Click on LIRN (Library and Information Resources Network).

4. Click on “Alphabetical View”. Click on the “S”

5. Click on “Science Database”

6. Let us first perform a “Basic Search”

Let us look for articles mentioning Dr. Anthony Fauci so, type Anthony Fauci and click on the search tool.

Scroll down until you find the article titled: “10 reasons why Anthony Fauci was ready to be the face of the US pandemic response”.

Note: If you cannot see, modify your search in a convenient way until you can see it.

a. Who is the article’s author?

d. Click on “Cite” and copy the citation using APA 6th – American Psychological Association, 6th Edition. Paste the citation as part of your answer.

8. Click on Science Database to return to the search page.

9. Click on Advanced Search.

Using the “Advanced Search” we are going now to look for articles written by Dr. Anthony Fauci.

10. Type:

Anthony Fauci, and select Author (It will look only for articles where Dr. Anthony Fauci is one of the authors).

Keep AND (both conditions are needed)

Vaccines, and select Abstract (It will look for articles mentioning vaccines as part of the abstract)

Select Limited to: peer reviewed

Select Publication date: Last 3 years (If you can not find the article, expand the number of years as needed)

Select the article titled: A Centenary Tale of Two Pandemics: The 1918 Influenza Pandemic and COVID-19, Part II.
