Introduction
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is among the oldest schools in the South. It was founded in 1824. It is the state’s only integrated academic health sciences center that has a unique charge to serve the state via patient care, research, and education (Al Kasab et al., 2017). It is linked with the provision of training to approximately 3,000 students and, utmost 800 residents in the following colleges: Nursing, Medicine, Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Graduate Studies, and Pharmacy. Additionally, it has been dedicated to delivering the best quality patient care while still training compassionate and competent health care providers to offer services to the persons in South Carolina.
In running its services, MUSC had a strategic plan that has been focusing on different aspects. For instance, it is embedded in the value-driven telehealth clinical services. It has also been focusing on providing high-reliability telehealth infrastructure as well as the workflow that will ultimately take part in promoting effective care delivery (Kern et al., 2020). Furthermore, MUSC has been training the current and future workforce regarding the use of telehealth. Lastly, its strategic plan focuses on optimizing partnership, outreach, and marketing opportunities.
Organization Mission, Vision, Programs, and Population
It has been a public institution of higher learning. It serves the purpose of optimizing and preserving life in South Carolina and other parts. Additionally, it has been providing an interprofessional environment for discovery and learning via education of the biomedical scientists and health care professionals. It has also been providing comprehensive healthcare as well as researching the health sciences. It has also been focusing on changing the culture of biomedical research, and it has been focusing on offering education to the students in the following colleges, namely: college of nursing, dental medicine, graduate studies, pharmacy, health professions, and medicine. Besides, the mission of MUSC has been to preserve as well as optimizing the human life that is beyond the research, education, and patient care. To be specific it has to focus on telehealth for effective & efficient care. On the other hand, it has a vision that focuses on innovative telehealth approaches that will be fully integrated into the delivery of patient-centered and high-valued care (MUSC Health, n.d.). The MUSC has been targeting to educate and train the students and residents in health, research, and sciences.
Governance Structure
Governance is known as how rules, actions, and norms are regulated, structured, sustained as well as being held accountable. Consequently, it is the degree of formality that depends on the internal rules that are of a given organization. Besides, the governance of the Medical University of South Carolina is led by Chair Laura Kasman. The governance is under the officers and senate. The board of officers and senate have been taking part in guiding the proceedings of the senate as well as conducting the faculty senate elections; certifying the eligibility of the faculty for the education as well as maintaining appropriate records of elections (Kern et al., 2020). More so, the governance board has also been taking part in interpreting the provisions of the bylaws and constitution.
The governance board has been taking part in codifying amendments or changes to the bylaws and constitution as deemed relevant or necessary. The governance employed by the Medical University of South Caroline is an effective one since it was a being abide by the laws, and it has been taking part in influencing the policies through rules and policies. Thus, where rules and policies are applied it has been effective, and they show that rules and policies are core pillars for governance. The major pillars of this governance are that no policies were passed without the governance board knowing, and the decision-making process has been the simple one.
Funding Practices and Sources
The Medical University of South Carolina has been receiving funds from different sources. The common funding sources have been the sponsors, students, taxpayers, alumni, donors, and other affiliates (Medical University of South Caroline, n.d.). Specifically, the fees paid by the students were being relied upon by the Medical University of South Carolina to fund its practices, process, and operations. Sponsors and alumni were also taking part in financing its business processes and operations especially during events of the institution. Taxes were also part of the sources of money for running its operations. Among the elaborated funding sources, they are many and diversified, and therefore, the possible strength of its funding practices is being reliant on many sources, and therefore, lack of money due to unavailability of its main source has not been a major problem because of the multiple income streams. Thus, multiple income streams have been the major advantage or benefit.
Summary/Conclusions
The Medical University of South Caroline is a strategy-driven public institution that focuses on providing care. In executing both its mission, and vision, MUSC was governed by the governing board that consisted of both officers and senators, and they have been mandated to make rules and regulations and monitoring the performance of the institution. More so, amid the time of running its operations and processes, MUSC has been relying upon the sponsors, students, taxpayers, alumni, donors, and other affiliates.
