Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Service

The organization coordinates responses in the United States at the occurrence of disasters. It also overwhelms the resources of state and local authorities. FEMA supports first responders and citizens to ensure that the nation works together to build, sustain and improves its preparedness for, recover from, protect against, mitigate and respond to all forms of disasters or hazards. The amended Disaster Act of 1974, Public Law 93-288 grants the organization the responsibility to coordinate government-wide relief efforts. The organization is designed to bring a systemic and orderly means of natural disaster assistance for local and state governments at their responsibilities of helping the public (FEMA, 2018).

The Service Partnership

FEMA works hand in hand with the Federal government. The federal government provides full assistance to the organization when the cost of a certain disaster to localities or states piles up. However, the federal government authorizes this assistance only with the approval of the President and at the request of the governor of the affected sate. FEMA coordinates disaster assistance provided by the Farmers Home Administration or the Small Business Administration, but it does not fund these activities.

Technological Assistance in the Provision of Shared Services

Technological transformation especially social media plays a major role I providing shared services to the public. For example, social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook can be used by citizens to notify the FEMA and the federal government the occurrence of a disaster in a certain state.

The government, as well as the organizations, mandated to provide shared services, may also use social media platforms to notify citizens where to obtain such services. For instance, FEMA can use these platforms in a state affected by a disaster to direct citizens to safe places to avoid more damage.

Technology advancement boosts planning in shared services planning. For example, advanced analytics provides insights on products and customers (Consultancy Services, n.d.). When shared services providers bolster their social media skills through training, improves rapport and responsiveness of customers.
