Eyewitness Evidence
Many people put profound faith in eyewitness evidence and over the years, eyewitness evidence has been regarded as the “best” kind of evidence (Boyce, Beaudry, & Lindsay, 2017). Eye witness evidence has a lot of impact in any criminal case and it can alter the trajectory of the case in immeasurable amounts. Therefore, one of the core questions that this research will aim to answer is how reliable the eyewitness evidence is. The other questions that the research will aim at answering are questions like how can one measure the accuracy of eye witness evidence and what could distort the reliability of an eye witness evidence. Identifying the reliability of eye witness evidence is essential as it prevents the making of inaccurate decisions in a criminal case based on inaccurate eyewitness evidence.
The topic was chosen since it addresses important issues in the criminal world and the justice fraternity as a whole. Eyewitness evidence can be used to convict a person, and this is an example of just how powerful the topic is (Boyce, Beaudry, & Lindsay, 2017). Due to the faith put in it by many people despite the common criticism it faces sometimes, it is therefore important to understand the degree of its reliability. This research is relevant in criminology as it will differentiate facts from opinions and set the record straight in the exploration of an area that is not often addressed.
Various approaches will be used such as conducting a thorough review of literature and studying various examples of cases to determine the issue of reliability of eye witness evidence. The pitfalls to be avoided will include the exclusion of works that are biased, not acquiring information from sources with questionable credibility, and not conducting the research with a preconceived notion about the topic. This is because the preconceived notion about the topic will influence judgment on the research. Multiple research designs such as the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods will be applied to successfully address the topic of the reliability of eye witness evidence in a criminal case.
