Let’s Talk Diaspora: Writing Assignments on Latina/o/x Immigration Directions, Guidelines, Rules, and Expectations
Once you have absorbed and indulged yourself to the preliminary studies, identities, experiences and history/historical markings and significance of Latina/o/x peoples, Part 1 Week 1 and all of Week 2 of Introduction to Latina/o/x Studies will focus on the diasporic/immigration patterns of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and South American peoples to the United States (Week 3 will focus on the contemporary diasporic/immigration patterns of Central Americans [specifically from the Northern Triangle] with our first book, Enrique’s Journey).
In order to establish the unique, comparative histories of each region/country, we will hold writing assignments on the immigration of our Latina/o/x groups, starting with US Mexicans and ending with US South Americans.
For each designated Latina/o/x diasporic/immigrant group, you will read the required articles and respond to the following questions:
1. For each Latina/o/x group, please summarize at least ONE major diasporic/immigration event discussed by Latina/o/x Studies scholar(s) in the required reading. There will be at least one article for each section. Please write at least one paragraph summarizing/describing the ONE immigration/diasporic pattern you select. Please list the name the diasporic/immigration event (if any) (for example, Operation Bootstrap, Bracero Program, The Brain Drain, Post-US-Mexican War, Marielito Boatlift, Post-Trujillo wave, Operation Condor, First Wave of Cuban Exiles, Second Wave of Cuban Exiles, etc.).
Note: For US Mexicans, US Dominicans, and US South Americans, you will be assigned to read two articles. When selecting your one diasporic/immigration movement, please choose to describe only ONE from the two required reading pieces. You will read and unpack all of the diasporic/immigration narratives highlighted by our Latina/o/x Studies scholars, but for this writing assignment, I want you to select only ONE major diasporic/immigration movement of each group.
2. Please summarize/describe the factors and motivations why each designated Latina/o/x group left their respective region/country. Please write at least one paragraph summarizing/describing the factors and motivations for leaving their region/country.
3. Please summarize the experiences/hardships/living conditions of each Latina/o/x group at arrival to the United States. If it’s listed, please name the major cities/towns where these groups settle and (if explained) why they settled in these locations (i.e. Miami, New York, Newark, Los Angeles, Chicago, Hawaii, etc.). Please write at least one paragraph summarizing/describing their living conditions and experiences adapting to their settlement.
4. For each Latina/o/x group, please share and summarize what you learned from reading the required articles. Please write at least one paragraph describing what you learned reading from each diasporic/immigration pattern.
Please answer all of the questions for each Latina/o/x group in a Word document
And before you ask, in my class, a paragraph is 4 to 7 sentences. You can write more if you’d like, but you are only required to write one paragraph for each question.
