Lesson Title: Relay Race

1. §116.52. Foundations of Personal Fitness
Knowledge and skills.
(1) Movement. While participating in physical activity, the student applies physiological and biomechanical principles to improve health-related fitness. The student is expected to:
(A) apply physiological principles related to exercise and training such as warm-up/cool down, overload, frequency, intensity, specificity, or progression; and
(B) apply biomechanical principles related to exercise and training such as force, leverage, and type of contraction.
Instructional Segment
Warm-up: (5 min.)
To warm up the students we’ll do a variety of stretches to warm up their legs, including toe touches, quad and hamstring stretches. We’ll have the students jog in place to further warm up their muscles, then begin the activity.
Equipment/Materials: Set-Up: No set up required
None
Transition: After the warm up, students and instructors will divide into two even teams and line up one behind the other.

Prepare (2 min.)
Students:
Motivation: Good Afternoon, today we are going to be running a relay race.
Student Expectation: Students will be expected to complete their turn of the race and exhibit good sportsmanship.
Transition: Students will meet us at one side of the room, divided into their two teams before the activity begins.
Explain/Demonstrate: (3 min.) – As I explain, I will demonstrate for the students.
· Today we are going to be running a relay race. This will help the students work on stamina, agility, team work ability and hyper awareness.
· The object of this exercise is for each member of the team to complete the course before the other team. Running down to touch the established line on the other side of the court and back so that the next team member can begin.
· When you are performing the workout. It would be best if you run to your fullest speed, breathe and keep good running form.

· Each student is expected to complete the full course, running all the way to the other side of the room and back. We will make sure to establish the line before we begin.

Facilitating Questions:

Practice: (5 min.) “Soccer”
Procedure: There will be one student and two instructors on each team. One instructor from each team will begin the workout to act as a demonstrator. They will run down the court to the established pivot point line the run back towards their team. When they reach the next person in line on their team, that next person will start running and mimic the same procedure pivoting at the same line and returning. The same will happen for the last person in the line, and whoever gets back to their team first will be earn their team the win.
Important Safety Note: Make sure students are staying lined up and out of the runner’s way to avoid collision and injury.
Transition: With 2 minutes left, we will have the students do a cool down stretch focusing on the muscles in the legs.
