The content and form of the email that accompanies your final draft attachment will also be graded—it should be clearly formatted and crafted with a proper, academic or professional tone (pp. 417-419).

WHAT TO WRITE? CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

· An informative report that includes a researched, referenced, well-reasoned analysis of a topic related to the student’s academic and career aspirations

· An essay for admission to an actual advanced academic program or graduate school

· A persuasive report that makes an evidence-based recommendation to a supervisor

· A letter-to-the-editor of a trade publication that responds to a previously published article (include the original article)

· A detailed cover letter and resume for an actual job application (include evidence that confirms the job opening)

Both drafts should demonstrate an applied understanding of the guidelines below.

FOUR IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:

As Hamilton and Kroll (p. 412) indicate, “The best written communication performs at least four important functions.” These best practices should guide your writing.

· ADAPT TO THE AUDIENCE

Put yourself in the position of the person reading what you have written.

· MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION

What does your writing say about you—your character, honesty, knowledge, trustworthiness, authenticity...?

· BE EFFECTIVELY ORGANIZED

Does your writing make sense? Are things presented in a logical order?

· LOOK PROFESSIONAL

Is the format (names, addresses, greeting, salutation), typeface (font size and type), layout (margins, design...), etc. appropriate?

You will be graded on following these best practices as well as the details of this assignment, demonstrating clarity and accuracy in your writing, and responding to comments on your first draft by effectively refining, revising or rewriting your final draft.

IT’S FINAL!

This is the final Lesson of the semester, worth 15% of your final grade. As with all assignments in this course, please let me know if you have any questions.

Looking forward...
