Analyzing a Collection of Multimodal Arguments

Look at the three images that appear on pages 255-256 of Perspectives on Argument, and then answer one or more of the following questions:  Compare the hands in each of the four photographs.  How are they similar?  How are they different?  Discuss how juxtaposition is used in each of these photographs.  What is the effect?  What additional associations form in your mind as you look at each of these four photographs?  What is your personal interpretation of each of them?  That is, what does each communicate to you?  How effective are each of these images as arguments?  How effective are they as a collection of images that makes an argument?

Image 1: West Bank Barrier

This photograph appeared over the caption “Father and daughter waving a Palestinian flag stand near the Israeli separation barrier being constructed in the West Bank.” This wall has long been a source of tension between Israelis and Palestinians.

Image 2: Drawing National Boundaries

This image accompanied a 2015 CNN news report about the immigration debate in the United States. It depicts a flag put up by protesters objecting to illegal immigration near Campo, California.

Image 3: Adam and God: This image is a reproduction of a work of art. It was painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome by Michelangelo in 1511, where it can be viewed today; it depicts the creation of Adam.
