Activity – Creating a Signavio Account
To access Signavio you first need to register an account via the Academic Initiative. The registration is free for students and academic staff, but there are some restrictions. Please be aware of your responsibilities.
It is best to use the Chrome Browser or Safari on OSX to use the drawing tools in Signavio.
You will need to use your student email account (VIT email) to register: type the following link into your browser
https://academic.signavio.com/p/register
and fill out the form displayed. You will need to agree to the terms and conditions and use the
Captcha service
After registering an account, you may be asked to confirm this by an email sent to the email address
you used to register your account with. Click on the link sent in an email if required and then type the
following link into your browser
https://academic.signavio.com/p/login
You will see a web page load with the following login form :
Fill in the login form and click ‘Login’ to connect to the Signavio process editor.
After logon, you should see the Signavio Explorer. Take a quick look at each pull down menu. Under
the ‘Setup’ menu select ‘My Profile’. Enter any missing information and save.

Note: Some of the steps in the following exercise may be slightly different than shown below. You
will need to reflect on what you are trying to accomplish with each step and take appropriate action.
There are a number of getting started tools and videos which can
be found by clicking the drop-down help-menu item on the top
left of the browser window. See the image to the left.
You can also go directly to many video presentations on aspects
of Signavio using the link:

There is also a user guide in the menu to the left. You should
explore some of these. There are no Signavio videos on creating
EPC diagrams, and these are mentioned briefly in the User Guide

However you should explore the user guide to get a feel for the
product.
Creating a new Model
We will use one of the EPC diagrams in the supplementary notes material to create a new Signavio
EPC model. Use the following one ….

From the drop down new menu …. Select “Event Driven Process
Chain EPC”
Note that there are many types of models.

Note the new tab which is
opened for the new model
Find the purpose of each
icon in the toolbar
change the pull-down
repository to “EPC
Complete”
Observe the different
modeling shapes
Click the Save icon to save your diagram
Give the model a name
Choose a location (or default to shared
documents)
Write a description
Drawing Canvas

Drag an event shape onto the drawing canvas and name the event
“Paint Required”
Click on the green shape
and drag it below the event to
create a process (function) connected to the event
Give the process a name (“Determine Color”)
Then click on the Dictionary icon to create an entry in the dictionary
Find out the purpose is of all the icons surrounding the process
Finish the EPC diagram so it resembles the one shown on Page 4.
Your diagram should look like the following

Use the Syntax checking option to check the syntax of your diagram
If your diagram looks like the one above, there will be no errors, however if you have put something
together incorrectly, then errors will be detected as in the diagram below.

You should try and introduce a problem into your diagram, check the syntax and see the result.
Make use of this facility when you are putting your assignment diagrams together.
Don’t forget to save you file before exiting… and log out of Signavio correctly.
