how you can promote self-awareness
Leona Campbell
Self-awareness has been cited as one of the most important foundational skills of leadership. Showry and Manasa (2014) state that those who reflect on their experience are more likely to emerge as leaders than those who do not. Similarly, Church (1997) comments on the positive impact self-awareness has on enhancing decision making and self-development.
One technique I use to practice self-awareness is obtaining frequent feedback from my subordinates, peers, and superiors. In the military, we use a program called 360 feedback that allows our teammates to make candid comments and recommendations for us. The feedback allows me to evaluate myself from others’ perspectives. Secondly, the order of merit list is another tool I use to evaluate myself in relation to my peers. Suls and Miller (1977) state that individuals learn about themselves by comparing themselves with others of the same or similar caliber. The understanding of how you compare with your peers allows you to identify strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, keeping a historical record of evaluations is also a great tool to use for self-evaluation. With a historical record, one can see if their performance has declined or increase.
Self-awareness can be promoted in the workplace through recurring evaluations or requirements using self-awareness tools. Establishing a rhythm that requires leaders to use tools such as the MBTI or Myers Brigg test will not only promote the use, but establish buy-in
